Boost Mobile was started in 2002 and purchased by Sprint in 2006. They offered service on Sprint’s CDMA network and effectively acted as Sprint Prepaid. On July 1st, 2020, Boost Mobile was purchased by Dish Network as part of the agreement for the Sprint-T-Mobile merger. Furthermore, as part of the merger agreement, Boost Mobile is now able to offer plans on the T-Mobile network as of May 13th, 2020. Boost Mobile refers to the T-Mobile network as their Extended Network. New and existing customers are able to switch to the Extended Network by going to a Boost Mobile store and getting a new SIM card compatible with their smartphone.
Boost Mobile’s plans were previously focused on family discounts and unlimited data plans on the Sprint network. However, since being acquired by Dish, Boost Mobile's plans have shifted focus. They are now offering more affordable prepaid plans. Boost Mobile's lowest cost options now start at just $10 per month for 1GB of LTE data, a significant drop from the previous most affordable option that was $35 per month. Boost Mobile's new $hrink-It! plan also rewards customers who make on-time payments by reducing the cost of the plan by up to $10 after six on-time payments.
Boost Mobile's current plans are as follows:
Boost Mobile’s biggest limitation had previously been their device support. Boost had an extremely limited BYOD program (Bring Your Own Device), making it challenging for customers who had purchased unlocked smartphones to activate them on Boost Mobile's plans. However, now that Boost Mobile is able to provide service on the T-Mobile network, it should be possible to activate almost any T-Mobile compatible smartphone with Boost Mobile.
Boost Mobile typically offers good deals on budget smartphones if you choose to purchase directly from them. For the best experience, we recommend you bring your own unlocked device to activate on Boost Mobile. An unlocked phone means it isn't tied to any carrier or contract. Having an unlocked phone gives you the freedom to switch plans or carriers at any time.
You can find great deals on unlocked smartphones on a site like Swappa, with whom we have an affiliate partnership. We feel Swappa can help you save money on your new smartphone, offering discounts between 20% and 50% off.
Boost Mobile offers excellent family plan discounts available for all of their plans.
Boost Mobile uses the Sprint network for coverage. On May 13th, 2020, Boost Mobile began offering service on their Extended Network, which uses T-Mobile for coverage. The Extended Network plans include additional features, such as VoLTE and 5G access.
