This Privacy Policy explains how BestPhonePlans LLC ("BestPhonePlans," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit bestphoneplans.net and related pages that link to this Policy (the "Site"), subscribe to our newsletter, or otherwise contact us.

The short version

• You don't need an account to use the Site, and our phone-deals calculator never asks for your name, email, phone number, or carrier account details.
• We use PostHog analytics (including session replay on a small share of visits) to understand how the Site is used. You can turn analytics off at Your Privacy Choices, and we honor Global Privacy Control automatically.
• We don't load PostHog analytics for visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland.
• Many deal buttons are affiliate links. When you click one, the affiliate network and merchant can set their own cookies, and we may earn a commission.
• We record the answers you give the phone-deals calculator, including your full ZIP code.
• We may sell reports made from aggregated, de-identified Site data. We don't sell your email address.

1. Who we are

BestPhonePlans is a consumer information site that compares cell phone plans, covers deals and industry news, and may earn commissions when you use certain links to sign up for service or buy products.

We also co-founded CoverageMap. CoverageMap links and embeds on the Site are not paid placements. CoverageMap is a separate service with its own privacy practices (see "Embedded content" below).

2. Information we collect

2.1 Information you give us

You don't need to create an account to browse the Site or use the calculator.

2.2 Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, we and certain partners automatically collect:

• Device and browser information: IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, screen size, language, and time zone
• Usage information: pages you view, the page that referred you, timestamps, clicks (including deal and affiliate link clicks), and scrolling and other interactions
• Approximate location: city, region, and country, estimated from your IP address. We don't collect precise (GPS) location.
• Diagnostics: page performance measurements and, on some visits, a session replay recording (see Section 4)

2.3 Information we don't intentionally collect

• Payment card details (purchases happen on carrier and merchant sites, not ours)
• Government ID numbers
• Precise geolocation
• Other sensitive personal information, such as health, financial account, or biometric information

Please don't send us sensitive information by email.

2.4 Categories of personal information (for U.S. state privacy laws)

We collect and use these categories for the purposes in Section 8 and keep them as described in Section 10. We don't intentionally collect sensitive personal information as defined by those laws.

3. Cookies and similar technologies

We use first-party cookies, local and session storage, scripts, and iframes. Affiliate and embed partners may set their own cookies when their content loads or when you click through to them.

Your choices:

• Your Privacy Choices page: the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link in the footer of every page goes to bestphoneplans.net/privacy-choices, where you can turn analytics off for your browser (Sections 4 and 5.3).
• Global Privacy Control is honored automatically (Section 15).
• Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland: we don't load PostHog analytics, so PostHog sets no cookies and collects no data from your visit. We identify these visitors from the country our CDN (Cloudflare) reports for each request and remember the result in a first-party cookie (bpp_region) for 30 days. Embedded content (such as YouTube or the CoverageMap map) and affiliate networks you click through to may still set their own cookies (Sections 5 and 7).

3.1 Services used on the Site

We also use other service providers to host and operate the Site (for example, application hosting and our database). They may process information only to provide services to us.

3.2 Managing cookies

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking cookies may affect how some features work. If you delete your cookies, your analytics opt-out is deleted too, and you'll need to opt out again. Affiliate links need the affiliate network's tracking to credit a commission when you choose to use them.

4. Analytics (PostHog)

We use PostHog to understand how the Site is used and which links and features work.

• Analytics events are sent through our own domain (/api/signal) and then to PostHog, which processes them as our analytics provider.
• We record page views, automatically captured interactions, page performance, your phone-deals calculator answers (Section 4.1), and an event each time you click a deal link (Section 5.1). Together, these show us the paths people take through the Site.
• Session replay records mouse movements, clicks, and scrolling on 10% of visits. Recordings are kept for about 30 days. What you type into form fields is masked, and the phone-deals calculator is never recorded. We use replays only to fix problems and improve the Site. We don't sell them or use them for advertising.
• We don't use PostHog heatmaps or surveys.
• Location: we pass your IP address to PostHog so it can estimate your approximate location (city, region, and country).
• Turning analytics off: you can turn off analytics for your browser at any time at bestphoneplans.net/privacy-choices, linked as "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" in every page's footer. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal the same way (Section 15). When analytics is off, PostHog doesn't load in your browser, nothing is recorded in PostHog, and your deal-link clicks are no longer linked to your visits. Deal links still work. Your choice is saved in a cookie, so it applies only to that browser, and you'll need to opt out again if you clear your cookies or use a different browser or device.

4.1 The phone-deals calculator

When you use the calculator at /phone-deals:

• Your answers are saved in the page address. The phone, carrier, lines, and ZIP code you choose are written into the link (for example ?device=…&zip=…) so you can bookmark or share your results. Anyone you send the link to can see those answers, and the link stays in your browser history. Partner scripts that run across the Site, such as HeadBid and ValidClick (Section 3.1), receive the address of the page you're on, which on the calculator can include these answers. Your browser also keeps your answers in session storage until you close the tab.
• We record your answers and the deals we showed you in PostHog, under your PostHog browser ID. This includes the full ZIP code you enter, the state it's in, and its first three digits. We use this to understand which phones and situations people price, which deals they compare and choose, and where people stop using the calculator, and to create the aggregated, de-identified reports described in Section 5.4. We remove your ZIP code from the page addresses PostHog records with each page view.
• Some answers are kept on your browser's PostHog profile: your current carrier, the phones you have and want, your line counts, and your state and the first three digits of your ZIP code. This lets us tell a returning visitor's second scenario from a new visitor's first. It's tied to a random browser ID, not to your name or email.
• None of this changes how deals are ranked. Deals are ranked by their three-year cost for your answers. What we record, and what we're paid, doesn't change where a deal ranks.

If analytics is off for you, your calculator answers stay in your browser and the page address and aren't recorded in PostHog.

5. Affiliate links, advertising, and sales of data

5.1 How deal links work

Many "Buy," "See deal," or "View plan" buttons are affiliate links. If you click one and later buy or sign up, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Every deal and plan button on the Site goes through our own redirect at /go before sending you to the carrier, merchant, or affiliate network (such as Impact, CJ, or ValidClick). Those networks and merchants may then set cookies or similar IDs on their sites. For each click:

• We store a record in our own database: a random click ID, the deal, plan, and carrier you chose, which button you used, where we sent you, the time, and your PostHog browser ID and session ID. We don't store your IP address or browser details in this record.
• We send one event to PostHog with the same details and the page you clicked from. Your IP address is passed so PostHog can estimate your location (Section 4).
• We pass the click ID, but not your PostHog IDs, to the affiliate network, so we can match a commission reported later to the click.
• If analytics is off for you (by opting out, through Global Privacy Control, or because you're visiting from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland), we still record the click so commissions can be matched, but without your PostHog IDs, and nothing is sent to PostHog.

We use these records to match commissions to the deals that earned them and to understand which deals and buttons people use. We keep each click record for 13 months, then delete it automatically. Before deletion, each click is added to monthly totals by deal, plan, carrier, and button. Those totals contain no browser or session ID, and we keep them indefinitely.

5.2 Advertising

Apart from the affiliate and click-quality partners described in this Policy, we don't currently run third-party display advertising networks on the Site. If we add advertising partners that collect information from your browser, we'll update this Policy first.

5.3 "Sale" and "sharing" under U.S. state privacy laws

We don't sell your email address, your session recordings, or the calculator answers we record in PostHog.

Under California, Colorado, and similar state privacy laws, "sale" and "sharing" can include making personal information, such as cookie IDs, click IDs, page addresses, and click data, available to other companies. When you click a deal link, and through partner scripts that run on the Site, affiliate networks, click-quality partners, and merchants receive this kind of information. That may count as a "sale" or "sharing" under those laws, even though we're paid a commission only if you sign up or buy.

How to opt out:

• On the Site: use bestphoneplans.net/privacy-choices, linked as "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" in every page's footer. This turns off analytics in your browser and stops your deal-link clicks being linked to your visits.
• Automatically: turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser (Section 15).
• By email: write to [email protected] with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information." We'll apply your request to any information we hold that's linked to your email address. Because most Site data is tied to a browser rather than to your name or email, please also use the Privacy Choices page or Global Privacy Control in each browser you use.

When you choose to click through to a merchant, the affiliate network and merchant may still set their own cookies; their own policies cover that (Section 16).

We don't knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.

5.4 Aggregated, de-identified reports

We may create aggregated, de-identified reports from Site data and share or sell them to other companies, such as industry analysts. For example: how many people priced a particular phone in a ZIP code in a month, how many planned to trade in a phone, which carriers they were leaving, and which deals they chose.

• Reports contain group totals only. They contain counts and percentages for groups, never records about individual visitors, browser IDs, session IDs, click IDs, or IP addresses. Any group with fewer than [DECISION NEEDED: minimum group size] people is left out or combined with others so that no individual can be singled out.
• We keep this information de-identified. We take reasonable measures to make sure it can't be linked to a person or browser, we don't try to re-identify it, and we commit to keeping it in de-identified form.
• Recipients must agree in writing not to try to re-identify it and to pass the same obligation on to anyone they share it with.
• We sell only aggregated reports. We don't sell event-level or browser-level data. If that ever changes, we'll update this Policy first.

Information that is properly de-identified or aggregated in this way is generally not treated as personal information under the U.S. state privacy laws described in Section 14, so the opt-out in Section 5.3 doesn't apply to these reports. If analytics is off for your browser, PostHog doesn't collect your browsing activity or calculator answers, so they aren't used in these reports.

6. Newsletter (Mobile Monday)

If you subscribe, we send your email address to Beehiiv, which hosts and delivers Mobile Monday. Beehiiv processes your email address and related subscription and engagement information (such as whether you open an email or click a link) under its terms and privacy policy. You can unsubscribe using the link in any newsletter email.

7. Embedded content

• YouTube embeds may set Google/YouTube cookies and collect data as soon as the embed loads, even if you don't press play.
• CoverageMap embeds load a frame from CoverageMap that includes analytics (Google Analytics), mapping (Mapbox), and Cloudflare tools inside that frame. Those parties' practices apply to the embed. CoverageMap mentions on BestPhonePlans aren't paid.
• Links to Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and other social networks are ordinary links. We don't load social media tracking pixels on the Site.

8. How we use information

We use information to:

• Operate, secure, and improve the Site
• Measure how content and features perform (analytics and session replay)
• Match affiliate commissions to the clicks that earned them
• Create the aggregated, de-identified reports described in Section 5.4
• Send newsletters you've asked for
• Respond to messages and requests
• Detect fraud, abuse, and invalid clicks
• Comply with the law and enforce our terms and policies

9. How we share information

We don't sell or rent subscriber email addresses to anyone.

10. How long we keep information

When we no longer need personal information, we delete or de-identify it, except where we must keep it for legal reasons or until it ages out of routine backups.

11. Security

We use HTTPS, access controls, and established service providers to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If you think there's a security issue involving the Site, please contact us.

12. Children

The Site is for a general audience interested in cell phone plans and isn't directed to children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact [email protected] and we'll delete it.

13. Visitors outside the United States

We're based in the United States. If you visit from outside the U.S., your information may be processed in the United States and other countries where our providers operate.

If the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to our processing of your personal data, we rely on:

• Consent for newsletter subscriptions
• Legitimate interests for operating and securing the Site, matching affiliate commissions to clicks, and preventing fraud and invalid clicks
• Taking steps at your request when we respond to messages you send us
• Legal obligations when the law requires us to keep or disclose information

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our use of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. To exercise your rights, see Section 14.

14. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live (for example, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, or another state with a consumer privacy law), you may have the right to:

• Know about and access the personal information we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate information
• Delete personal information (with some exceptions)
• Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information and of targeted advertising (Section 5.3)
• Appeal if we deny your request
• Not be discriminated against for using these rights

How to make a request: email [email protected] with "Privacy Request" in the subject line. Tell us what you're asking for, include the email address you've used with us (if any), and give enough detail for us to find your information. Because most Site data is tied to a random browser ID rather than your name, we may not be able to link browsing data to you unless you can help us identify it.

We'll verify requests as the law requires (for example, by confirming you control an email address). If you use an authorized agent, they must show proof that you authorized them. If we deny your request, you can appeal by replying to our decision with "Appeal" in the subject line.

California "Shine the Light": we don't share personal information with other companies for their own direct marketing purposes. See Section 5.3 for how affiliate tracking is treated under California law.

15. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

Do Not Track: there is no common standard for browser Do Not Track signals, so we don't currently respond to them. Global Privacy Control, below, is the signal we honor.

Global Privacy Control (GPC): we treat a GPC signal as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and of targeted advertising, for the browser sending it. When your browser sends GPC, PostHog analytics doesn't load, and your deal-link clicks are recorded without your PostHog IDs and aren't sent to PostHog. You don't also need to visit our Privacy Choices page.

16. Other websites

Carrier and merchant sites, social networks, CoverageMap, YouTube, and affiliate networks have their own privacy policies. This Policy doesn't cover what they do once you leave our Site or interact with their embeds or cookies.

17. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date above. If we make material changes, we may also post a notice on the Site or email newsletter subscribers.
