MobileX is a prepaid cell phone carrier.
They use the Verizon network for coverage.
What makes MobileX different is they offer a unique pay-as-you-go plan. The MobileX application monitors your talk, text, and data usage in real-time and learns your usage habits. It then creates a custom plan tailored to your specific needs. You can choose to purchase the rate plan the app recommends or you can build your own plan.
You only pay for the data you use with the MobileX custom plan.
If you accidentally buy too much data, then your unused rolls over to your next billing cycle.
MobileX also offers two “fake unlimited” plans. These are similar to what you see from other prepaid carriers, like Mint Mobile, Boost Mobile, US Mobile, and others. These plans include a set amount of high-speed data before slowing your speeds to around 128Kbps.
MobileX’s two fake unlimited plans are:
The two fake unlimited plans are a great value.
The two closest plans on the Verizon network come from US Mobile. The same $20 per month gets you only 12GB from US Mobile, which is 3GB less than MobileX. US Mobile’s Unlimited Basic plan comes with the same 30GB as MobileX, but it’s $5 more expensive at $30 per month.
MobileX’s plans are affordable, and the brand seems consumer-focused.
Overall, I think the service will be worth it for lighter-data users looking for an affordable plan with Verizon coverage.
MobileX launched November 1st, 2022 and is currently in beta.
MobileX is an MVNO that uses the Verizon network to provide coverage.
MobileX was founded in November of 2019 by Peter Adderton.
Peter Adderton is the founder and CEO of Boost Mobile Austrialia and Boost Mobile U.S., so you could say he has some experience launching prepaid cell phone carriers. MobileX is privately held, so it does not have to churn record profits to appease shareholders.
Instead, MobileX has the freedom to be more of a consumer-focused brand.
And I think that’s what they are trying to do.

MobileX offers two types of plans plans:
There are two options when you choose the MobileX custom plan.
The first option is to let the MobileX AI platform build a plan for you.
The way it works is the MobileX AI platform monitors your talk, text, and data usage for a period of time. Then, once it understands your usage patterns, it recommends a plan tailored to your specific needs. If you like the option it gives you, you can select that as your plan.
The second option is building your own custom plan.
This is where you are in control.
You can get a talk and text package and bundle it with the exact data amount you want. As I understand it, you should have options to set your bill beforehand so you are not auto-charged if you go over your limit. And if you accidentally purchase more data than you need, MobileX will roll your unused data into your next billing cycle.
You also have options to control your video streaming quality.
You can select from 480p, 720, 1080p, or go up to 4K.
All Custom Plans also include premium data. Premium data is where your data speeds are slightly faster during times when the Verizon network is busy. This can include at sports events, stadiums, concerts, airports, or other areas where a lot of people are on their phones at the same time.
Finally, you can use all of your available data as hotspot data on the Custom Plans.
MobileX offers two “Fake Unlimited” plans:
Calling their plans “Fake Unlimited” plans is MobileX calling out the other fake unlimited plans in the industry.
A “fake unlimited” plan is where you have a certain amount of high-speed data per month, and then after your high-speed allotment you get unlimited data at slow speeds.
Typically those speeds are around 128Kbps.
That makes your data basically unusable.
Unfortunately, we see a lot of fake unlimited plans in the industry. That’s because Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile never give truly unlimited access to their networks to MVNOs. So in order for an MVNO to offer an “unlimited” plan, they need to set a high data limit and hope that most consumers don’t hit it.
And most consumers don’t.
That’s because the average data usage in the United States is hovering around the 12GB to 18GB mark.
In fact, I’ve heard that most people on TRULY unlimited plans only ever use 18GB to 20GB per month. And that’s with all the music streaming, video watching, and social media they want.
Fake Unlimited plans aren’t bad.
It’s just worth knowing exactly what you’re getting before you sign up.
