Do You Need Unlimited Data?

A lot of people like having unlimited data plans because they don’t need to think about their data usage.

You can stream as much music as you want, watch as many YouTube videos as you want, send all the Snapchats and Instagram posts as you want, and binge as much TikTok videos as you want all without the fear of overage charges.

But, it turns out that data overages are a thing of the past.

Almost all plans these days simply reduce your data speeds when you go over your high-speed allotment, and they don’t charge any data overages.

All of your favorite social media apps, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and even YouTube, are also optimized to use as little data as possible thanks to video and photo compression algorithms.

So, what if you could still enjoy all your favorite social media apps as much as you wanted, while also reducing your cell phone bill with a data plan that met your specific needs?

You can.

Ericsson’s 2021 Mobility Report finds that on average, people are only using 14.6GB of data per month.

And even customers on truly unlimited data plans are only using an average of 18GB to 20GB per month.

That’s with watching their favorite YouTubers, listening to their favorite music, and watching far too many TikToks.

So it turns out that most people don’t need a truly unlimited data plan.

Instead, they could get a high-data plan that still meets their needs and saves them hundreds of dollars per year.

For example, instead of getting Verizon’s 5G Play More plan, you could get US Mobile’s 18GB plan. 18GB is more than the average person uses in one month, and at just $25 per month it saves you a cool $660 per year.

Checking your data usage and getting a plan that meets your needs is one of the best ways to significantly reduce your cell phone bill.

Check out our article How Much Cellular Data Do You Need to see exactly how to check your data usage and find a plan perfect for you.

If you’re using less than 35GB, odds are you can switch to a high-data plan and save big.

And if it turns out that you are using over 35GB per month, then you do need a truly unlimited plan.

And we’ve got you covered with the 5 best unlimited plans on the Verizon network:

Visible’s unlimited plan is one of the best value unlimited plans in the industry.

It’s also the cheapest truly unlimited plan available ans still comes packed with a surprising amount of features.

For $25 per month, you get unlimited data, unlimited hotspot data with speeds up to 10Mbps, 5G access on Verizon’s 5G Nationwide and 5G Ultra Wideband networks, and free international calling to Canada, Mexico, the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Visible also supports eSIM, which is perfect if you want to use this plan in a dual-SIM compatible phone.

At such a low price, there are a few compromises though.

First, Visible limits 5G speeds to 200Mbps.

I don’t know anyone or anything that could fully use a 200Mbps connection on a mobile phone (after all, 25Mbps is all you need to stream a 4K video), but it is still worth knowing about.

The second compromise is in network performance.

Let me explain.

Visible is deprioritzed. This means that during certain times of the day or at crowded areas when the Verizon network is busy, Visible speeds can temporarily slow down a LOT compared to plans with premium (also called priority) data.

Check out my video below to see an example of how data speeds can compare during congestion:

Another factor that impacts Visible's performance is it only has two data servers: one in Colorado and one in New Jersey.

All Visible traffic needs to be routed through these servers.

What this means for you is that you can sometimes have high pings times. This translates to higher latency, or potentially laggier gameplay for online games and occasionally the service feeling a little slow.

Still, at $25 per month, it is a tremendous value, and I’d consider taking advantage of Visible’s 15-day free trial before ruling them out. Visible can still work great for a lot of people.

Next up, I’m recommending US Mobile’s Unlimited Premium Plan.

This is $45 per month, which is a great price, and it includes some killer features.

When you activate with a 5G phone, you get priority data. This gives you the same performance as Verizon’s postpaid plans directly. You’ll have faster speeds anytime the Verizon network is busy.

You also get 50GB of hotspot data, 720p video streaming, and up to 10GB of free international roaming data in 153 countries.

It’s more expensive than Visible, but you get some great features with US Mobile that I think make it well worth the extra price.

Plus, US Mobile’s family discount will drop the cost of the plan down to just $30 per line, and they’ll throw in two free streaming services of your choice with four or more lines.

Another great value plan on the Verizon netowrk is Xfinity Mobile’s unlimited plan.

I’m calling this the “best bundle plan” because it includes great perks & discounts when you bundle it with your Xfinity internet service. More on that in just a bit.

This plan is $45 per month and includes 20GB of data at fast speeds, and then unlimited data at 1.5Mbps down and 750Kbps up. You also get 5GB of high-speed hotspot data.

I think this is right on the edge of being an unlimited plan.

20GB of high-speed data is plenty for most people, and the 1.5Mbps speed cap is enough for stuff to still work, but I think it’s kind of meh when you compare it to US Mobile’s Unlimited plan.

That said, Xfinity Mobile’s plan is here because it has 5 key perks that make it an overall great value:

  1. You get premium data. That means the same data speeds and priority as Verizon postpaid customers directly.
  2. You currently get unlimited access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, and 5G Ultra Wideband doesn’t count against your 20GB high-speed allotment. It also kinda means you get unlimited high-speed hotspot data on 5G Ultra Wideband too, which is awesome.
  3. You get free unlimited access to Xfinity’s over 19 million Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide. Usage on these hotspots also doesn’t count toward your 20GB high-speed allowance.
  4. Xfinity gives you a bundle discount when you have mobile and Internet, which saves you up to $30 per month on your Xfinity Internet plan. That alone helps make this plan such a great value.
  5. Xfinity has great discounts on phones for new customers or existing customers who add a line. You can currently get $250 off a new iPhone. And the best part is that no trade-in is required.

If you’re an existing Xfinity customer, Xfinity Mobile is easily worth a look. Check out my Xfinity Mobile review for more information.

Best prepaid unlimited plan: Verizon Prepaid Unlimited Plus

Number four on this list is Verizon’s own Prepaid Unlimited Plus plan.

Besides Visible, this is basically the cheapest truly unlimited plan you can get on the Verizon network. And that’s why it’s here.

No 100GB limit like US Mobile (though 100GB is still heaps of data), and no 20GB high-speed limit like on Xfinity Mobile.

It’s $70 per month with the auto-pay discount, and it includes unlimited data, 10GB of hotspot data, 480p video streaming, and half a gig of high-speed data roaming in Canada, Mexico, and the US Virgin Islands.

You also get full access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network.

Finally, Verizon’s Loyalty discount drops the price to as low as $60/month after 10 months, which makes this plan an even better value.

Finally, we Verizon’s 5G Get More unlimited plan.

This is the best-of-the-best in terms of Verizon’s plans.

It includes unlimited premium data, 50GB of hotspot data, 720p video streaming, free data roaming in Canada and Mexico, and a metric ton of perks.

We’re talking free Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, free Apple Music, free Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass, one free TravelPass day per month, 50% off a tablet or connected device line, and 50% off Verizon 5G Home Internet or $30 off FiOS internet.

Phew.

It’s expensive at $90 per month with auto-pay, double the price of US Mobile Unlimited Premium, but you certainly get what you pay for.
